How do you make a model on tidal energy?

    Depending upon your level at school, your model doesn’t have to actually work. Rather, it must depict what is going on. – One could even do this with a poster model. – But, a 3-D model in a bucket of water would certainly be more impressive; even more so if you can light up a light bulb to depict the energy being made. Lighting a light bulb is as "simple" as running a wire from a battery to a light bulb; a straight or direct wire would mean that the light bulb would be continuously lit until the battery ran out (you might think in terms of an LED flash light bulb which uses far less energy). Of course, if your tidal energy was actually charging a battery pack for a more even power dispursal system…Else, it would be nice to have some type of a switch between your light bulb and battery; manually connecting and disconnecting the wire is some type of a switch by the way.

    Many of the turbines themselves consist of a tube with fins. The fins catch the moving water which turns the turbine which operates the electricity making generator…..To me, it seems like a turbine could be fashioned out of an aluminum soda can; on the other hand, a smaller individual serving type of juice can may be a better size even if it would be harder to cut fins into the sides with a tin snip type of tool. On the other hand, if you can put enough enamel paint onto and into the cardboard of a toilet paper roll you could use one of these; don’t forget the top and bottom edges along with the interior. Of course, your turbine needs to be suspended within a frame work (think straws) somewhat similar to a roller brush frame so that it can freely move with the "pressure of the water under the change of tide". Again, this is a depiction so, you could physically move your turbine using a string wrapped around the turbine; this is similar to a string top, yo-yo, or wood spool noise maker of yore. (Getting the string re-wound is a different story, it may require manually picking the turbine out of the water and re-winding the string; or, you might get more clever than this quickly typed idea.)

    Then, you will need a bucket of water. You could simulate the tidal action by making waves. But, it would be cool if you could actually decrease and increase the water volume as your tide is going out and coming in….A pump would be cool. But, a gravity fed hose into a bucket and a big measuring cup could provide your tidal action too.

    Lastly, this will provide a depiction only. You need to tell folks what they are suppose to be seeing. Label the turbine, how and why the fins are moving, and how the electricity is being generated. Label the line running from the turbine to your battery, how and why it is used. Label your battery, how and why it is being used in your system. (If the battery is not a part of your energy generation system, hide the battery and simply run a line from the generator, like black yarn, to your light bulb). Label your light bulb as being representative of the gird and end-use of the generated electricty. If you use a measuring cup to generate an incoming tide, then mark it as "the incoming tide generator". Likewise your bucket as an ocean or sea edge; include information like a narrow inlet where the tide rushes with great force or, if it is the ocean bottom somewhere. Label your hose or other "out-going" tide generator. – To support your depiction model, you may also want a poster with a more life-like depiction, and more or similar labeling.
